Grass Benefits

So having foraged 3000tonnes of grass in just 2.5 days, it's now time to have a look at the benefits of grass in the rotation and as you can see from the pictures it certainly has helped with getting the soil into a good friable state with an abundance of earthworm activity present making it an active alternative crop to maize. Not only this but the grass will help to add organic matter back into the soil when ploughed over. Another advantage of growing grass over winter is that it will mop up any surplus soil nitrogen as well as suppress weeds and act as a break crop by interrupting pest and disease cycles whilst also prevent soil erosion over winter when the land would otherwise be bare. Last day of grass today and what a crop it has been with moisture reading between 27.7 and 31.2% DM and yields of 42t/ha. Already planning for next year  to grow 200ha which is a further 150% increase on what has already been a 300% increase in area for this year but hopefully land will come forward. Thanks to Dickie Barns and his team for doing a great job and for sticking to plan A all the time.

Grass harvesting for the Biogas has started. With just short of 75ha to be foraged the next few days are going to be busy. Yields are around the 40t/ha mark which is fantastic but as a result it has meant the need for extra tractors to be brought in to help haul the crop. No rest though for the land, as green goes to brown ready for the maize to be drilled tomorrow. Fingers crossed the rain stays away and we can get the whole crop in and sheeted in time before Thursday. Pressure is on!!!
